Every team needs a hero, and in baseball there is one player that holds the ultimate responsibility of being that person, tasked with finishing out the victory. In 1969 baseball instituted the save rule. It stated that a save is accredited to the relief pitcher that finishes a game for the winning team under certain prescribed circumstances, which is typically a three or less run lead.
