A smudge or two. A nice dusting of eraser shavings. That unmistakable smell of pencil lead . The side of your palm blackened. These are the remnants of a pencil-created masterpiece.
Today is Pencil Day! For many artists and designers, the pencil is still their bread and butter. Much of what ends up as beautiful graphic designs and artistic ads starts as crude pencil sketches. It’s still the easiest creative tool to use.
Though such days are dwindling, there is nothing like starting a project with a perfectly sharpened pencil, when it’s just the right length and has plenty of eraser left but isn’t brand new. A pencil can be the catalyst to your next creative flurry. Like a fresh pair of socks, it puts you into a comfort zone that can allow you to thrive.
So, the question is: What is your version of the “sharpened pencil” now? Is it a specific computer program? A certain website? A tablet? Or something unrelated?
Or maybe it’s still a pencil. If not, today would be a good day to bust one out and get to know your roots. . . Then, switch back to your computer when your hand gets sore and you remember that your handwriting is similar to that of a 4th grader. But in the meantime, enjoy your pencil-based freedom!
