5 Font Blogs to Know and Love
Tip of the cap to 5 of our favorite typography blogs.
Betwixt (yeah, I used betwixt) your layout, stock photos, and color scheme fall fonts. In design, the presentation of your text can be a deal-breaker. Fonts need to be readable and clear, but there is plenty of room for creativity too. They can be understated or powerful, or powerful in their understatement. The key is finding the font that fits.
Below are 5 blogs that can help you find such a font. Give them a look and let us know some of your own favorites.
Fontdeck Blog – This blog highlights some of the best fonts Fontdeck.com has to offer, but also keeps an eye out for typography trends and uses. It runs on the Tumblr platform, making it an ideal visual venue to showcase different fonts with plenty of examples. The examples are often accompanied by detailed descriptions and brief histories.
The Fontfeed – An extensive look at typography, which includes links to videos, news stories, tips, and real world examples. We recommend checking out their write up on album cover designs and packaging. For some bonus fun, hover your mouse over the Fontfeed header and watch it cycle through various fonts. Wee!
Nice Web Type – Enjoy the brief introductory video to get acquainted. The blog is rather easy to follow with a simple, straightforward setup. What makes this site interesting is that it links to another blog documenting the creation of a Tumblr version of Nice Web Type. It is interesting and no doubt helpful to see the thought process behind some of the design choices.
The Ministry of Type - What sets this blog apart from some others is its in-depth looks into specific works and artists. From wine bottles to movie posters, it covers several different instances of typography and looks into some of the processes involved in their creation.
Thinking with Type - An excellent learning blog, it covers the specifics of typography, such as x-heights, tracking, and kerning (yes, that’s a real word). It is all presented in an easy to follow fashion. For an educational laugh, check out “The Personals: a tyopgraphic dating game” page.
